Gracious Living

be gracious

I am in a business where the king of the hill mentality is the rule.  To be honest with you, I am tired of it.  It seems the little things that we take for granted as individuals in business is forsaken on how a good liar you can be.  I am sick and tired of all the games people play.  I am taking a whole new approach to business. I am being more gracious than ever before. I am going against the grain here, but it will pay dividends morally for my spiritual being.  Seems like old school.

Be attentive to what people say. Respond, without interruption. You always have time. You own the time in which you live. You grant it to others without obligation. That is the gift of being gracious. The return — the payback, if you will — is the reputation you will quickly earn, the curiosity of others, the sense that people want to be in the room with you. The gracious man does not dwell on himself, but you can be confident that your reputation precedes you in everything you do and lingers long after you are finished. People will mark you for it. You will see it in their eyes. People trust the gracious man to care. The return comes in kind.

14 Year Old Hamburger

wtf

Here is one hamburger that got away from Bill Clinton. David Whipple found a 14 year old hamburger in the pocket of his coat. That is an odd place to keep a hamburger. What is more surprising is the condition of the hamburger, it almost looks the same as the day it was bought. I am happy to know if we all blow ourselves up one day that cockroaches will have an abundance in hamburgers from McDonald’s to survive on. Never mind “I am lovin’it”, how about I will last forever.

14 year old mcdonalds hamburger

“McDonald’s hamburger patties in the U.S. are made with 100% USDA-inspected beef. They are cooked and prepared with salt, pepper and nothing else – no preservatives – no fillers. Our hamburger buns are made from North American-grown wheat flour. These are the same foods that people buy every day in their local grocery stores.” – McDonald’s USA ( and they are sticking to it)

Boston Marathon Bombings

boston-bomber

Confusion is absorbed, hate starts settling in as you ask why?  No innocent child deserves to die at a marathon. What sick twisted individual comes into this world to unleash terror upon us?  We try to live a normal life but that cannot be, suspicion is abound and there is not a safety net anymore for us. Missiles pointed out direction and killings within. Is this madness going to stop?  Seems things are not getting better but worse. This is not suppose to happen here.

Surface Pro: Alternative to The Wacom Cintiq

drawing on the surface pro

I am looking for a tablet that does the work of a Wacom Cintiq. The people at Staples and Best Buy were helpful but did not understand my needs for a tablet that has good drawing tools like a Wacom device. I just hate those external Wacom pen tablets that you attach to a computer. I feels so unnatural to me when drawing. I have the three generations of iPads and find them to be more entertainment devices than actual drawing precision devices. I checked the Samsung Galaxy Note, I was not too keen on the Android interface of the tablet. It had a pressure sensitive pen but the screen was a tad small.

surface pro

I kept coming back to the Surface Pro from Microsoft which has a full operating Windows 8 version unlike the cheaper version called the Windows Surface RT. Adobe programs are still not fully Windows 8 ready and from the research I did online, Autodesk SketchBook Pro 6 (app) will suit my needs to both sketch and ink drawings easily. I am sure Adobe will address the needs of a few artists like myself who are looking to go totally paperless. Sure I could just buy a Cintiq, but I feel these machines are expensive and will be out of date in a hurry considering the other tablet makers are knocking at their door with devices that will put them out of the market. Purists will swear by their Wacom’s products. I need a fuller package.

The Windows Surface Pro seems to be the better device out there that fulfills all my needs right now. It is more than a tablet, it is also  a computer and with the Windows environment there are many possibilities to add other programs. The portability factor also helps. I recommend you try  Surface Pro as an alternative Wacom’s Cintiq. I plan to draw a kids’ book on the Surface Pro. Wish me luck guys.

Since the old Windows tablet computers I’ve been looking for a good way to draw digitally on the go. I gave the iPad a shot but I don’t like drawing with the “eraser tip” capacitive touch styluses. When I read that the Surface Pro uses Wacom tech I was interested. I went down to our local MS store to try one on the day they launched. The demo machine only had one drawing app on it called Fresh Paint which seems like it’s mostly for kids but it was enough to see that the pen felt good and the pressure sensitivity was solid. I came home and mentioned on Twitter that I was interested in the Surface Pro as a drawing platform and I was contacted by MS and offered a machine to test out (I love my job). A few days later I had a brand new 128gb Surface Pro to play with. (Penny Arcade)

The Windows of New York

windows-of-new-york

Architecturally speaking New York City is the mecca of design.  Jose Guizar’s weekly obsession of drawing windows from New York City is an interesting idea.  This could be a nice coffee table book when completed. I love the strong colors used to encompass the free standing windows. Personally I am a door fan, they are more elaborate and mysterious. Perhaps a sequel for Jose?

“The Windows of New York project is a weekly illustrated fix for an obsession that has increasingly grown in me since chance put me in this town. A product of countless steps of journey through the city streets, this is a collection of windows that somehow have caught my restless eye out from the never-ending buzz of the city. This project is part an ode to architecture and part a self-challenge to never stop looking up.”

Carved Crayons

Pete Goldlust loves to carve pencils.  I love the intricacies of his designs. The only thing I could do with a crayon and a sharp blade is get a wasted Sunday afternoon in the emergency with paper towel paper wrapped around a bleeding finger or two.  I will leave such tasks to experienced individuals. My thumb is still throbbing from my last mishap. Somewhere in Vancouver there is a totem pole wishing it was blinged out  like these carvings.

Awful Animals: Ugly Dolls Knockoff

awful-animals

Talk about a blatant rip off. Awful Animals is copying the success of the Ugly Dolls line. This is what happens when your products are made in China. Manufacturers will knockoff your product at a lower cost. Imitation might be a form of flattery, but this is ridiculous.  I can hear Kevin O’Leary leering in my thoughts about mass producing products such as this in China without proper copyright. At one tenth of the cost of an Ugly Doll, the Awful Animals seem like a bargain. This is awful!
