Spore Galactic Edition

Spore Galactic Edition
The surge of gratuitous sex and violence has found a new domain to breed this vile culture for kids to absorb like sponges. Parents are quite content to welcome this cesspool of degradation into their houses without flinching an eyelid. They have become the baby-sisters of many impressionable young minds. The gaming industry has become ever so over the top with many new games and exploit the crustier side of humanity. The gaming world have done their part by affixing labels that clearly indicate the appropriate age for these games. Finger pointing can be assigned to many but as a society we have to burden ourselves with a legal responsibility to create better games for our youth. There are many gaming industry people who are making a valiant effort to bring them to the public.

One good example is the game Spore where you create amazing new worlds and you can play with your imagination at a whim. The game is gaining a vast following and has upgraded to new spawn of the original game. Galactic Spore leaves you wanting more and more. This is a great way to really explore kids’ minds with games that challenge young ones to create whole new worlds. There should be more games like this that come to the forefront and show parents killing and degrading humanity in games is not the only way to have fun. What kind of young people will grow out of these games? Give us something like Spore and we will better as a society. From Backgammon and Chess that with simple standard rules that have the universality of black versus white or us versus them will always enjoy popularity form many more centuries to come. I believe that Pac-Man will outpace more recent gaming because of the simplicity of the idea. Will Spore be a timeless game, maybe not, but it’s  going in the right direction in helping kids appreciate good gaming.

Super Mario Galaxy

Super Mario Galaxy

Super Mario Galaxy

My kids can’t get enough of this game this week. It’s the coolest offering so far on the Wii.

  • Become Mario as he traverses a galaxy of gravities, traveling in and out of gravitational fields by blasting from planet to planet. Players experience dizzying perspective shifts as they run upside down through wild alien worlds that need to be seen to be believed.
  • Controlling Mario is as simple as can be with the Wii Remote and Nunchuk. Players move Mario with the Control Stick and shake the Wii Remote to perform a spin move or cue stars that launch him to and from planetary objects. Players can even point at bits of stardust to collect them or latch onto stars to blaze a magnetic trail through the heavens.
  • Don’t want to head into space alone? With a second Wii Remote, another player can play alongside by pointing at and collecting bits of stardust, then launching them at enemies. The second player can even sweep aside projectiles or stall enemies to help make Mario’s adventure easier.

Barbie Recall

Barbie Girls - Gold
Barbie Girls
Business is getting tougher all over. Mattel toys is no different from any other business model. With sagging sales for Barbie, they came up with barbiegirls.com and in just 3 months logged in 4 million registered users. Not to be outdone, Mattel got with the times and created a device that is a mini-doll, a MP3 player and a USB device that interacts with sections of  barbiegirls. A real stroke of genius, considering that Barbie doll sales are down and with lead recalls, doesn’t help. Sink or swim if you want to be ahead of the game in today’s competitive market and Mattel is hitting the right chord with innovative devices such as these.

At barbiegirls.com girls can create their own, personalized online space–everything from designing a "room" to creating a character–where they can then play games, chat with gal pals, watch videos, and even shop with earned virtual money. Word filters, moderation tools, and other safety features ensure that the virtual world stays friendly and fun to all visitors, but the added security and benefits of this Barbie Girl device are ingenious.

The Barbie Girl device is basically an MP3 player with attitude. First, it offers a range of customizable fashions and accessories, delivering the next generation of fashion doll play. Second, it is a music device with 1GB of on-board memory. Third, the Barbie Girl device acts as a "key" for girls who have a room on barbiegirls.com. Girls who have this device and who have physically connected them into one another’s computer docking stations can become "best friends" and chat in "secret." It’s a more personal touch to the site experience and an extra layer of safety for parents. The device also allows its user to unlock additional pets, games, hangouts, fashions, and more online.

Teacher Gives Comic Book Pornography to 13 year old Girl

September 25, 2007

Twentieth Century Eightball (20th Century Eightball)
Graphic novels and manga are exploding like mushrooms all over North America. The major publishing companies are grabbing anything that comes down the pike after smaller companies who have made a little money on books like these. With that comes the clutter of garbage material that involves nudity and sexual and violent content in these books. What most publishers are avoiding to put on their books is some kind of rating system. Books are now finding there way to young kids, who are are not aware of the graphic material inside these books, the parents and teachers are oblivious to the stories inside. There has to be a better system to handle these books, there has to be some kind of responsibility at some level. These books are what they are and should be stated on the front. At least a big label on the front saying it’s kid friendly, or for a mature audience. Parents are not reading them neither are the schools and libraries.

In New Haven, Nate Fisher a teacher gave a comic book called Eightball featuring mild pornographic stories as reading material to a 13 year old girl student. Eightball is a comic book created from Daniel Clowes the author of the graphic novel "Ghost World," that was adapted into a feature film in 2001. The teacher resigned and the investigation cannot be continued after the parents of the 13 year girl read the comic book. The movie industry has a ratings system regulation as do the gaming industry. One or two comic book companies are putting a self-rating system, but I disagree there should be a universal system right away. What message are we sending our kids. The publishers know their market, why is manga within reaching distance of kids who can read material that is geared to adults. The majority of comics are written for adults and with that comes adult themes. I blame more the stores than the publishers, they have a responsibility to know what they are selling also. We all have to work together to make reading comics an enjoyable experience, just like books they belong to certain levels of reading, and clearly graphic novels for adults should not be in a classroom.  Read more>>

The girl’s father, who asked that his family remain anonymous because it has already been the target of criticism, described the graphic novel that English teacher Nate Fisher gave the student as "borderline pornography."

Joust in Time?

August 31, 2007

There is a story making rounds that Joust is going to be made into both a movie and comic book. I loved this game, it suckered me into dropping so many quarters in the machine till M.A.M.E. came around. To tell the truth I never went to all the levels, I just loved the sounds the game made. Now tell me is it a jest or does Joust has merit of movie fame. Time will tell.
