Carl Jung came up with the word archetype to describe the universality of a recognized symbol to a basic form. The original games that emerged in the early 80’s are pure modern archetypes in gaming with standard concepts recognized by a collective whole. Everybody knows the Pac-Man layout and Donkey Kong, stripped down to pure basic lines and colors, artist Brock Davis has fleshed the classic games to their primary essentials and still can be recognized. These images are embedded in our perception of the universe as are the symbols of our history. So if these are archetypes, then maybe we can also call them arcadetypes.
