I knew nothing of writer Filipe Melo and illustrator Juan Cavia. As I keep reading, the book flowed in a cinematic tone. How silly of me, both of the creators have cinema backgrounds. As most of you know your friendly bookstores are littered with superhero graphic novels. So it is very hard for good graphic storytelling to get through the mainstream audiences. Top Shelf Productions (an imprint of IDW) publisher of Ballad for Sophie, sums it as a music-themed graphic novel by Portuguese musician Filipe Melo and artist Juan Cavia that is packed with all of the drama of a rock ‘n’ roll biopic and with more twists than a night at the opera.
It has become a novelty act for many groups as of late to do a whole album of cover songs. Deep Purple has come full circle. Ian Gillan and Roger Glover who both were in Episode Six covered Arthur Lee's Love song "Alone Again Or." I am not surprised that the first song is "7 And 7 Is." It's a great selection of tunes on what is going to be perhaps the last official studio album for the group. Never say never. This is a great range of musical influences. Bob Dylan's "Watching The River Flow" is a welcome surprise. This is a must for Deep Purple Fans.
In the 70s it was a thing to gather a whole bunch of musicians to create a concept/rock opera album. Albums as Jeff Wayne's Musical Version of The War of the Worlds, The Butterfly Ball and the Grasshopper's Feast, Jesus Christ Superstar, Godspell, and The Wiz are perfect examples of rock operas that cobbled some up and coming talent of the time. Sergei Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf is another record released in 1975 with rock icons such as Manfred Mann, Gary Moore, Brian Eno, Phil Collins, and Cozy Powell.
Black Sabbath's Technical Ecstasy was a bitter pill for fans to swallow. The band was no longer hungry, most of them had nothing left in the can. Drugs had taken over the band and the music suffered. Sabbath strayed away from their roots and gave us perhaps the worst album in their recording catalog. However, a song like "She's Gone" is a polished gem that stood out from the lot. “It’s Alright,” is the first time we hear Bill Ward sing on a Sabbath album. There was nothing technical or ecstatic about this album. It was a train wreck from the beginning. It is rare if ever any songs are played live from this album. Time can be forgiving, Rhino has given us an extremely extended version of the album with new live songs and 90 minutes of new studio outtakes and alternate versions of the songs recorded. This deep dive is a welcome addition and perhaps salvation to a greatly misunderstood album. This offering is meant for the true Black Sabbath super-fan.

I am really pumped for the 50th Anniversary of the L.A. Woman special collection. I own The Doors LA Woman: The Workshop Sessions (2012). This is a welcome extension to that release. 2021 is a big year for The Doors with a lot of new material coming out from Robby Kreiger's first book and the complete writings of Jim Morrison. Unfortunately, it is also the anniversary of Jim Morrison's death. There is a lot to celebrate. 1971 marked a turbulent time for Jim Morrison personally with his trouble with the law. Contractually the band owed Elektra Records one more record and boy did it payback in spades. For the next 50 years, “Love Her Madly,” “Riders On The Storm,” and "L.A. Woman" would grace the airwaves. Nobody knew at the time that this was their swan song. Maybe Jim Morrison had an inkling it was his last record but did not share that information with anybody including the band.

Celebrating its 45 anniversary, Destroyer was originally released in 1976 and is considered to be one of the quintessential KISS albums. It is the band's first album to sell one million copies in its first year and holds the title of being their all-time best-selling studio album. Packed with concert staples and KISS Army favorites including "Detroit Rock City," "Shout It Out Loud," "God Of Thunder" and "Beth," on November 19, 2021, UMe will release KISS – Destroyer 45th in the form of a Super Deluxe 4-CD + Blu-ray Audio box set as well as on standard double black vinyl and limited edition yellow and red double colored vinyl, 2-CD set, and digital.
The Velvet Underground does not get proper praise from the general public. True fans are well aware of the importance of the band's importance in rock and roll history. Lou Reed's imprint on this band laid out his trajectory for his own solo career. The Velvets had a deep impact on David Bowie. The group was entrenched in the gutter of the psychedelic truth of the gritty drug culture of the 60s. The lyrics were not candy-coated, they painted a harsh reality of the facade of the "love generation." The was darkness festering at the seems of the peace movement and The Velvet Underground exposed them in their early work. People were in denial, they did not want to hear dark tones of despair "The Velvet Underground: A Documentary Film By Todd Haynes" is a deep-dive into the group as never seen before. This is a great beginning point for new listeners to purchase the new 2CD and digital soundtrack and true fans who will get some new material.
The latest installment in Grapefruit's acclaimed series of 3-CD, four-hour celebrations of a specific calendar year in British pop history. 1965 saw the beat/R&B revolution of the previous two years twisted into new, more ambitious shapes as British pop reached a shattering crescendo of sound, with feedback, fuzzboxes and (in Graham Bond's case) the Mellotron adding to the sonic mix. The year was a dizzying melange of visceral Pretty Things/Kinks/Small Faces garage band raunch, blue-eyed club soul (courtesy of mod-favored groups like The Action), Searchers-derived jingle-jangle folk-rock and Zombies/Poets-style minor chord introspection.

You never know when the magic is going to happen. Witness the saga of The Sandals' 1966 album The Endless Summer. The San Clemente, CA-based surf group The Sandells had released their album Scrambler! on the World Pacific label in 1964 to little notice when they met up with surf documentary maker Bruce Brown.

In this follow-up to our “Come On Let’s Go! Power Pop Gems From The 70s & 80s” compilation, we have extended the timeframe to cover the 90s and even include one outlier from the 2000s. There was just too much great power pop being made beyond the 70s and 80s for us to ignore. Another change to this volume is that we look beyond American shores and include selections from the UK and Australia. As before, we take a broad view of power pop and you will find elements of punk, new wave, garage and various other sub-genres within. However, we can guarantee that all our selections are top-notch songs delivered with all the jangling guitars, catchy hooks, banging beats and snappy tunes that make power pop such a blast.
YouTuber Burls Art built an insane bass out of 2,000 LEGO pieces with an epoxy resin fingerboard and bridge-concealed piezo pickup.
It was 50 years ago that Jim Morrison died. Morrison's death is still shrouded in mystery. His legend grew 9 years later with the release of No One Here Gets Out Alive by Jerry Hopkins and Danny Sugerman and The Doors' Greatest Hits album in 1980. The celebration of the Lizard King still continues as The Collected Works of Jim Morrison was released this month.
Seth’s acclaimed graphic novel George Sprott has now inspired a modern opera by artistic director and musician Mark Haney. Captured on a classic vinyl record with sumptuous and over-the-top design by Seth, Omnis Temporalis: A Visual Long-Playing Record is part chamber music, part song cycle, and part audio drama. Haney’s unique project builds on Seth's original picture novella while standing alone as a musical triumph.

Get out the disco balls, disco is back! Foo Fighters have announced that they will be releasing a new album next month under the moniker the Dee Gees. They just covered the Bee Gees' "You Should Be Dancing" during a BBC Radio 2 session a few months ago. I really like this version, I am really ashamed to say that this could be Foo Fighter's best song ever in a long time. Did grunge bring back disco? The disco-inspired album called ‘Hail Satin’ will be available on July 17. The album will include four Bee Gees covers.
This fall, Craft Recordings will celebrate Halloween with a collectible, pumpkin-shaped vinyl album featuring Vince Guaraldi’s evocative music from It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown. Pressed on orange wax, the 45-RPM LP features 17 selections from the 1966 animated TV special, including the timeless “Linus and Lucy,” “The Great Pumpkin Waltz,” and the ghoulish “Graveyard Theme.
