Peanuts: Be My Valentine, Charlie Brown

Peanuts: Be My Valentine, Charlie Brown
Got Milk? Well it seems the Peanuts’ estate has plenty of it. The corpse of Schulz has the market cornered for every holiday on the calender and every birthday with either a Hallmark greeting card or new book on tired old gimmicks. The estate is milking the characters for all it’s worth. The latest is a book that is about a year old but a reincarnation of old Charlie Brown woes and misery themes of Valentines. You will see this little pop-up book grace many shelves. How many books are there really for Valentines? The heart shape pop-up book is a reminder of the cash cow that Peanuts is and will be for many years. I love the collection of work created by the genius of Charles Schulz, but when you walk into a Hallmark it’s just constant advertising for the empire known as Peanuts. I would love to see some new fresh ideas, the family should consider in bringing in new talent to make the franchise fresh. Blasphemy! Many strips are doing it. Why not? How many versions of this type of book are out there. Peanuts was relevant at one time, now it’s just a merchandising machine to the make the family richer. They should try an experiment where some of the top talent can draw a few strips of the comic strip and try to stay true to the themes and ideas with new spins. I would wager many cartoonists would jump at the idea. I want something new, not recycled books and DVDs. How many versions of Halloween, Christmas, Easter, and Thanksgiving TV specials are they going to put out. I know they are not the only ones guilty of this, but this year’s crop of newer and better quality DVDs was yet another example of cash grab.
