McDonald’s has found a rather unusual second career for its Happy Meal toys. Instead of spending their retirement in a forgotten toy box or beneath a car seat, some of those little plastic characters are getting a new job as a wireless computer mouse shaped like a box of French fries.
It’s a clever collaboration with Lenovo and part of McDonald’s China’s Reimagine Good Things initiative, which explores ways to turn old materials into new products. More than 60 per cent of the mouse’s exterior casing is made from recycled plastic collected from old Happy Meal toys.
The design is hard to miss. It looks like the familiar red-and-yellow McDonald’s fry carton, complete with a top resembling golden fries. But underneath the playful appearance is a functional wireless mouse with quiet buttons, Bluetooth and 2.4GHz connectivity, three adjustable DPI settings and a rechargeable battery.
There’s even a carrying pouch that unfolds into a matching mouse pad. Your mouse gets a place to sleep, and your desk gets its own little McDonald’s parking spot.
What makes this project interesting is the idea behind it. Happy Meal toys have a way of accumulating in drawers, toy boxes and places nobody remembers putting them. Many eventually lose their appeal, but the plastic doesn’t simply disappear. Finding another use for that material is a smart way to give yesterday’s toys a different purpose.
Of course, this isn’t going to solve the world’s plastic waste problem on its own. But it does show how familiar everyday objects can inspire a little creative recycling.
Here’s one mouse you’d actually want in your house. It won’t chew your furniture, steal your cheese, or upset the cat. Best of all, Mother Nature will be a little happier for it, too. Now that’s a Happy Meal with a second act.
