Recently rediscovered from the original recording sessions for Vince Guaraldi‘s iconic soundtrack for the 1972 TV special “You’re Not Elected, Charlie Brown,” this collection is a musical treasure for fans and newcomers alike. It features the original 15 cues from the special, now with extended performances available for the first time, along with 10 bonus tracks that haven’t been heard since their initial recording in 1972.
The tracks were expertly remixed at Bones and Knives by Terry Carleton, with restoration and mastering by Vinson Hudson, and production by Sean and Jason Mendelson. Both the CD and vinyl editions are meticulously crafted, with the CD featuring an 8-page insert and the vinyl a 4-page insert. Each includes artwork from the special and comprehensive liner notes. Derrick Bang, author of “Vince Guaraldi at the Piano,” provides a detailed track-by-track analysis, supplemented by insights from Sean and Jason Mendelson, the sons of Peanuts producer Lee Mendelson.
“This show’s music is truly a showcase of Guaraldi’s creative expression, and he had a solid combo to match a solid story: a match made in Peanuts heaven. So if the current election cycle is driving you nuts, listening to this expressive score could be the cathartic trick that will calm your nerves.” — From the liner notes by Sean Mendelson, co-producer of the album
Guaraldi’s genius shines through as he brings a delightful mix of Dixieland jazz, his beloved classics, and even his voice (for the first time in a Peanuts special) to the soundtrack. This vibrant score beautifully accompanies Linus’s memorable campaign for student body president.
When the session tapes were rediscovered, it became apparent that many of the songs had been cut down or edited (or replaced) for time or feel within the special for its final edit. This release resurrects many of those performances to their original full length. And for the first time, they can be appreciated independently, not underneath dialogue or effects from the special.
Standout moments include the complete, over five-minute rendition of “Joe Cool,” where Guaraldi lends his voice to celebrate one of Snoopy’s most famous alter egos; multiple versions of “Incumbent Waltz“; “Deserted Charlie Brown“; and a refreshed 70s take on the timeless “Linus and Lucy.”
Vince Guaraldi personally sings the “Joe Cool” theme in “You’re Not Elected, Charlie Brown,” marking one of the rare occasions where he lent his voice to the music he composed for the Peanuts specials. This is a special treat, as Guaraldi’s vocal contributions are infrequent. Another notable instance of Guaraldi singing is in the song “Little Birdie” from the 1973 special “A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving.” These moments stand out in the Peanuts series, showcasing Guaraldi’s talent as a composer and his unique vocal charm that adds an extra layer of warmth and personality to the beloved specials.
This release is a heartfelt tribute to Vince Guaraldi’s enduring legacy, capturing the spirit and joy of the original TV special while offering new depths for listeners to explore and appreciate.
The plot of “You’re Not Elected, Charlie Brown” is rooted in a comic strip storyline from October 1964. In this charming tale, Linus decides to run for school president, with Charlie Brown by his side as his enthusiastic running mate. Throughout the campaign, Linus manages to capture the lead in the polls, much to everyone’s excitement. However, in a humorous and heartwarming twist, Linus sabotages his chances—and Charlie Brown’s dream of being Vice President—by passionately discussing The Great Pumpkin in his final speech. The audience’s laughter and disbelief result in Linus losing the election. Interestingly, in this original comic strip story, Linus’ opponent remains a mystery, neither seen nor mentioned, which adds an intriguing layer to the narrative.
The original title for the special was “You’re Elected, Charlie Brown,” which is a phrase Linus says early in the show. However, during the final stages of production, the title was changed to “You’re Not Elected, Charlie Brown” to better reflect the plot, which centers around Linus’ campaign for student body president. This last-minute change is why there’s a caret with the word “Not” on the blackboard. Interestingly, despite the title change, the chorus still sings “You’re Elected, Charlie Brown,” adding a quirky and memorable touch to the special.
