1976 was the defining year for Thin Lizzy, marking a peak in their career that would shape their legacy in rock music. To honor this milestone, Universal Music Recordings is set to release a special Thin Lizzy box set titled 1976, celebrating the band’s two seminal studio albums from that year: Jailbreak and Johnny the Fox. This release will include vinyl editions and a Super Deluxe Edition (SDE) exclusive Blu-ray featuring five audio streams of both albums, including never-before-heard instrumental mixes.
These two albums are pivotal in Thin Lizzy’s catalog, establishing the band as a major force in rock for the next five years. Jailbreak contains the classic title track and the anthem “The Boys Are Back in Town,” which became their breakout hit and shot them to international fame. On the other hand, Johnny the Fox demonstrates the band’s musical diversity, with songs like the groovy “Johnny the Fox Meets Jimmy the Weed” and the fierce hit single “Don’t Believe a Word.”
With this box set, fans can not only revisit the music that defined Thin Lizzy’s career but also gain deeper insight into the creative brilliance of 1976, a year that remains central to the band’s enduring influence.
Thin Lizzy guitarist Scott Gorham has the following to say about these records: “The great thing was the writing, it was killer. I still don’t know if it was just something that happened naturally or because the pressure was on. But there are songs on these records we still play now. Songs that will always be in the Thin Lizzy set.”
