The USPS has joyfully announced a playful new addition to their stamp collection: a series based on the beloved children’s classic Goodnight Moon! This enchanting book, penned by Margaret Wise Brown and brought to life with the charming illustrations of Clement Hurd, first graced the world in 1947. Now, nearly 90 years later, Goodnight Moon continues to captivate generations with its gentle rhythm and cozy illustrations, reaffirming its timeless allure.

For our family, Goodnight Moon holds a special, moonlit place in our hearts. It was the very first bedtime story for our little ones—a comforting ritual we repeated countless times, night after night until the words and images were etched into our memories like the stars in the sky.
Goodnight Moon is a masterpiece of simplicity, containing just 130 words, 20 of which are the gentle refrain “goodnight.” In this brief yet enchanting text, Margaret Wise Brown weaves a soothing spell with her rhythmic and calming verses. Each line softly bids goodnight to the various objects in a little bunny’s room—everything from the comb and the brush to the bowl full of mush.
Brown’s minimalist approach, paired with the repetition of the comforting word “goodnight,” creates a lulling, almost hypnotic cadence that has charmed countless listeners over the decades. The act of saying goodnight to familiar objects turns the ordinary into the magical, helping young readers and listeners ease into a peaceful slumber. It’s no wonder this modest little book has become a bedtime staple in homes around the world, spreading calmness with each turn of the page.
With these new stamps, I’ll be eagerly filling my cart, reliving those snug, story-filled evenings every time I send a letter. What a delightful way to celebrate a cherished literary treasure!
