After decades of speculation and fan hopes, Spaceballs 2 is officially in the works, and longtime admirers of Mel Brooks’ iconic sci-fi spoof can rejoice—the Schwartz is strong once again! The sequel is being developed by Amazon-MGM and will be helmed by director Josh Greenbaum, marking a long-awaited return to the zany galaxy introduced in the 1987 cult classic.
In a nostalgic twist sure to delight fans, Rick Moranis is set to reprise his role as the villainous yet hilariously insecure Dark Helmet, while Bill Pullman will once again don the leather jacket of the swashbuckling Lone Starr. Mel Brooks is also confirmed to return as Yogurt, his unforgettable parody of Yoda.
Sadly, the sequel will move forward without original cast members John Candy and Joan Rivers, who brought beloved characters Barf and Dot Matrix to life. Their absence will certainly be felt, but their legacy remains deeply woven into the fabric of the Spaceballs universe. There’s no official word yet on whether Daphne Zuniga will return as Princess Vespa, but fans are hoping to see her back in action.
The new installment is being humorously billed as “A Non-Prequel Non-Reboot Sequel Part Two – but with Reboot Elements – Franchise Expansion Film,” playfully acknowledging the current state of Hollywood’s obsession with sequels, reboots, and expanded universes. Given the vast array of sci-fi franchises that have emerged or evolved since the original—Star Wars, Star Trek, Marvel, Dune, and more—Spaceballs 2 has a rich galaxy of material ripe for parody.
As Mel Brooks, now in his late 90s, returns to the universe he helped create, many are wondering if this will be his grand cinematic farewell—a final, hilarious hurrah from one of comedy’s greatest minds. Either way, Spaceballs 2 promises to be an interstellar event brimming with satire, nostalgia, and plenty of Schwartz.
