Tom and Jerry launched William Hanna and Joseph Barbera into stardom. What began as a clever cat-and-mouse rivalry in 1940 quickly evolved into one of the most influential animated properties of all time. The enormous success of these theatrical shorts not only solidified Hanna and Barbera’s place in animation history but also became the springboard for the creation of their own legendary studio, Hanna-Barbera Productions, in 1957.
Now, fans can relive the golden years of this timeless rivalry with Tom and Jerry: The Golden Era Anthology (1940–1958), arriving on Blu-ray and DVD on December 2. For the first time, all 114 original theatrical shorts created by Hanna and Barbera have been gathered into one definitive collection.
From their debut in Puss Gets the Boot where Tom was still called Jasper and Jerry went by Jinx this unlikely duo captivated audiences worldwide. Animator John Carr, who cleverly suggested the names “Tom and Jerry” in a studio contest (earning himself $50), helped cement the characters’ enduring legacy. What followed was a string of animated gems that combined slapstick comedy, inventive gags, and masterful storytelling. Their artistry set the gold standard for animated shorts and earned multiple Academy Awards along the way.

This meticulously curated anthology not only preserves the legacy of Hanna-Barbera’s Oscar-winning classics but also elevates it. Many shorts have been fully remastered, with enhanced picture and sound quality that make them look and feel sharper than ever and nearly identical to their original theatrical presentations.
The collection also includes three historically significant shorts—Casanova Cat, Mouse Cleaning, and His Mouse Friday are presented completely uncut and fully remastered on disc for the very first time.
Spanning five discs of restored content in stunning 1080p High Definition, The Golden Era Anthology delivers all 114 theatrical shorts along with 20 insightful commentaries. A sixth bonus disc rounds out the package, featuring more than three hours of additional material, including two brand-new, never-before-seen featurettes that shed fresh light on the artistry and cultural impact of this iconic cat-and-mouse team. The set also comes packaged with a collectible 28-page booklet with artwork and essays.
