The New Boy Scouts

Robert Baden-Powell

The world of Robert Baden-Powell’s Boy Scouts has changed since the early days. Enrollment has been on the decline as urbanite kids embrace the concrete jungles that they live in with the luxuries of video games. The scouts are seen mostly a white boy’s club at one time that shun diverse cultural and religious communities of the past. They have opened their doors to the reality that the melting pot is very disincentive and unique cultures still retain old ways. In order to adapt, both the boy and girl scouts are recruiting kids from different ethnic backgrounds and growing a true universal understanding of cultural differences. The Globe and Mail’s Dakshana Bascaramurty has an expose on the new youth movement within the scouts.
