When you return to school, book publishers are happy you will learn the golden rule. You should cause it’s a heavy price to learn. The bulk of your expenses in University is the textbook and the once 22 publishers in the US has dwindled to 5 publishers. Most were swallowed by bigger publishers. The main player now is Simon & Schuster. With so many jurisdictions and schools involved in the making and purchase of textbooks, this is one domain of the book publishing that should be looked at. Students are choking on debt and this is one expense that can be avoided with the Kindle and the iPad. If we really care about our education, it should be free for all or at least bring the costs down.
Every time a friend with kids in school tells me textbooks are too generic, I think back to that moment. “Who writes these things?” people ask me. I have to tell them, without a hint of irony, “No one.” It’s symptomatic of the whole muddled mess that is the $4.3 billion textbook business.-Tamim Ansary
