Apache: The most sampled song was released 50 years ago

50 years ago in January 1973, a major album made its debut. The Incredible Bongo Band “Bongo Rock” played a significant role in hip-hop history.  The song Apache would become the most sampled song from that album. Its long percussion break has been sampled countless times on hip-hop and dance tracks since the 1980s. If you are not into hip-hop, you will instantly recognize the beat or at some time heard in one song or another. Bongo Rock was featured in Robert Dimery’s book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die.

Bongo Rock,” credited to Michael Viner’s Incredible Bongo Band, was released in 1973 and did not set the world on fire. “It bombed.”

The 2013 documentary Sample This, directed by Dan Forrer and narrated by Gene Simmons, recounts the story of the Incredible Bongo Band and its recording of “Apache”
