Comic book master Basil Wolverton is perhaps considered to be the first guy to write and illustrate “dummy” books under the banner called Culture Corner. Many moons ago he worked for Fawcett Comics the publisher of Captain Marvel under the corporate comic book called Whiz Comics. He ran a strip from 1945 to 1952 called Culture Corner. It is basically a strip about how to be cultured in a weird way. As many collectors know Basil Wolverton was not your regular artist, perhaps one of the first fathers of the underground cartoonist in mainstream. Dinosaur Gardens a blog that claims to excavate the tar pits of popular culture has amassed a collection of Basil’s funny strip. You can also view it as a pdf file. This a great little collection of lost comic gold still to be mined, hopefully some publisher will dust them off and publish them. Great find.
