The concept of a Bixi bike is simple. It’s the marriage of a bike and taxi. You pay a fare to ride a bike downtown without lugging a bike around. You pick up a Bixi at a terminal and ride to your heart’s desire. You are charged for the amount of time your Bixi is used and return it to the various terminals around the downtown core. Montreal with very hard winter conditions imported the idea from France. The idea is generating revenue and at the same time driving up hospital bills. Seems the brains behind the Bixi concept forgot to offer helmets along with the Bixi. Exchanging helmets might be a solution just like when you borrow bowling shoes at the bowling alley. Not the most sanitary way of doing business. Lice alert!
The riders are oblivious to the dangers of riding a bike without a helmet. Doctors in Montreal are complaining of head trauma on the rise because of Bixi accidents increasing as the infant project is already showing cracks of failure. The Bixi is a great green project, however putting people in the hospital void of knowledge of helmet safety puts lives in danger. Montreal will ride out the future of the Bixi program and educate riders on helmet safety. The Safety Dance on the streets will continue for now. Bixi video>>
