You ever get one of those CAPTCHA tests—you know, the “prove you’re human” pop quiz where you’re forced to hunt for traffic lights, crosswalks, or microscopic bicycles hiding in pixelated fog? And somehow, no matter how carefully you click, the internet basically says, “Nice try, Optimus Prime.”
Well, that’s the exact nightmare fueling Victoria Warmerdam’s short film I’m Not a Robot, which just so happened to snag the 2025 Academy Award for Best Live-Action Short. The film follows Lara, a music producer who can master a track but apparently can’t master CAPTCHA. After failing the test repeatedly, she begins to spiral into an existential crisis. Is she human? Is she a robot? Or is she just really bad at recognizing blurry pictures of stop signs?
The cast of I’m Not a Robot includes Ellen Parren, Henry van Loon, Thekla Reuten, Juliette van Ardenne, Asma El Mouden, Sophie Höppener, Joep Vermolen, and Sieger Sloot. We think they’re human, but honestly, we’re still waiting on the CAPTCHA results. They seem human… though if anyone suddenly freezes mid-sentence or starts buffering, don’t panic, it’s just a minor system malfunction.
What makes the film brilliant is its blend of dark comedy and deeply resonant questions about identity, technology, and the increasingly blurred line between human and machine. It’s sharp, funny, and just uncomfortable enough to make you wonder if Siri has been judging you this whole time.
Blame your blurry-traffic-light nightmares on Luis von Ahn, the computer scientist who co-invented CAPTCHA—that mouthful of an acronym that stands for “Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart.” (Or as most of us know it: “Click all the squares with crosswalks until you start questioning your eyesight.”)
Not satisfied with just tormenting us once, von Ahn went further and created reCAPTCHA, the upgrade that not only double-checks your humanity but also ropes you into helping digitize old books and archives. That’s right—while you’re squinting at smudged letters and wondering if that’s an ‘m’ or an ‘rn’, you’re secretly doing volunteer work for the internet.
So, go watch I’m Not a Robot. Did it make you laugh? Did it make you question your humanity? Or did it simply make you terrified that the CAPTCHA overlords know something you don’t?
So… be honest. Are you sure you’re not a robot?
