The Creature Commandos debuted in Weird War Tales #93 back in 1980, brought to life by writer J.M. DeMatteis and artist Pat Broderick. This unique team is no ordinary group of soldiers; it’s a secretive military unit made up of supernatural beings, designed to tackle the most dangerous and unconventional missions. Overseen by Project M, a shadowy initiative launched in 1941, the Commandos were specifically created to fight covertly during World War II. These creatures—part monster, part soldier—were deployed in missions deemed too perilous for ordinary humans, combining horror and war in a bold new way.
The team consists of iconic figures such as Frankenstein’s monster, a werewolf, a vampire, and a gorgon, each brought together to serve as America’s secret weapons against the Axis powers. During battle, these monstrous heroes unleashed their terrifying abilities to turn the tide of war, adding a supernatural twist to the chaos of combat.
