After his move, he secured a position as art director at Grand Royal, a short-lived magazine and a spinoff of the Beastie Boys’ independent record label, where Spike Jonze was one of the editors. Despite the magazine’s brief run—publishing only half a dozen issues—this experience was pivotal for McFetridge. The magazine’s discontinuation presented him with a critical decision: to continue along a traditional graphic arts career path or forge his way as an independent designer. Embracing the latter, McFetridge chose to pursue his vision, setting the stage for his remarkable career as one of today’s most influential and visionary artists.
