Grateful Dead Unveil Greatest Hits Compilation to Celebrate 60-Year Legacy

You either get the Grateful Dead… or you don’t.

Being a Deadhead isn’t just about being a fan—it’s a state of mind, a lifestyle, a musical devotion unlike anything else in rock culture. The Grateful Dead inspires a loyalty far beyond casual listening, creating a uniquely tight-knit community of followers who continue to celebrate the band’s free-spirited ethos decades after their formation.

While the Grateful Dead are legendary in the United States, their global recognition has always remained somewhat under the radar. Unlike many bands that chased mainstream fame, the Dead built their legacy on improvisation, authenticity, and living on the outskirts of conventional success. For much of their career, they existed in a world of their own, driven more by live shows and grassroots fandom than by radio hits or flashy accolades.

That makes the news all the more surprising: after sixty years, the Grateful Dead are finally releasing an official greatest hits compilation. Yes—finally. For a band that just broke the record for the most Top 40 albums on the Billboard 200, it’s almost surreal that such a collection didn’t already exist. But now, it’s happening.

Out June 13, Greatest Hits arrives as part of the band’s 60th anniversary celebration. This long-overdue compilation gathers some of the most iconic songs that have united generations of Deadheads—from the laid-back storytelling of “Truckin’”, to the anthemic optimism of “Touch of Grey”, and the beloved folk balladry of “Friend of the Devil.”

The album will be available in several formats: a standard 1CD, a 1LP Dead.net exclusive Blue Smoke Vinyl, a digital edition, and a variety of limited-edition colored vinyl variants available through select retailers.

Greatest Hits features studio recordings from some of the band’s most cherished and enduring albums, including Workingman’s Dead, American Beauty, From the Mars Hotel, Shakedown Street, Terrapin Station, and In the Dark—each a cornerstone in the Grateful Dead’s sprawling discography.
