Like something out of a comic book, Guatemala experienced a giant sinkhole that just swallowed a whole building. The picture making the rounds on social and news sites and was discarded as a hoax, something photo-shopped but now turns out it is indeed real. Casualties are uncertain at the moment as what seems to be the gates of hell opening this bottomless pit. Sinkholes happen when soil is eroded by water underground to slowly give way and collapse to the natural source of water underground. Progress has always re-routed rivers and other bodies of water to accommodate cities. Cases such as this always turn to disaster when water finds ways to claim back land that was once a water tributary at some point in time. Guatemala like Brazil has a lot of precipitation being in the rain forest belt, sinkholes can easily be created by nature due to constant soil movement by water.
