In 1961, Indiana painted a canvas in varying shades of red with “LOVE” spelled out at the bottom, accompanied by four stars. This artwork sparked his idea to stack the letters. Then, in 1964, Indiana drew from his religious background to create Love is God, a grey-scale, diamond-shaped painting inspired by an inscription he remembered from his childhood Christian Science church: “God is Love.”
