Matt Harvey The Wimbledon Poet

“Bounce bounce bounce bounce/ thwackety wackety zingety ping/ hittety backety pingety zang/ wack, thwok, thwack, pok.”

Wimbledon has created a buzz with the latest grueling eleven plus hour marathon between American John Isner and Frenchman Nicolas Mahut. There is another spectacle of words by the Official Poet in Residence for the 2010 Championships, Matt Harvey. Matt is getting a following in the stands and by the media as the poet creates daily poems for the Wimbledon Championships. In collaboration with The Poetry Trust Matt has become a hit with the audience at one of the premiere sports events of the world.

Here is his poem for the longest match so far at Wimbledon. With a wry sense of humor Matt composed his shortest poem with a *haiku.

    high performance play

all day yet still no climax

    it’s tantric tennis

*a haiku is of Japanese origin, a short poem of three lines, each of five, seven, and five syllables respectively.
