Peru: Guinea Pig Festival

    Peru guinea pig festival

One would think that in Peru the celebrated Guinea Pig Festival is a tribute to the the little mite who is feted and dressed in regal tiny outfits. The main attraction of the show will actually be the main course. The strange festival turns into a food orgy of guinea pig as the rodent ends up as the delicacy on Peruvian plates. The native Andes rodent has always been a main source of food for many people in Peru. The meat tastes like rabbit or a bit like dark chicken meat.

guinea pigThe common guinea pig was first domesticated as early as 5000 BC for food by tribes in the Andean region of South America (present-day Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia),[5] some thousands of years after the domestication of the South American camelids.
