Popeye Enters the Public Domain With Two New Slasher Movies

Popeye enters the public domain with two new slasher movies, Popeye the Slayer Man and Popeye's Revenge, reimagining the iconic sailor as a spinach-fueled horror villain.

Popeye has officially entered the public domain, and following the quirky trend set by Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey, we’re getting not one, but two slasher movies featuring the iconic sailor. First up is Popeye the Slayer Man. The plot unfolds as a group of adventurous young people decide to explore an abandoned spinach factory, lured by the legend that it’s haunted by Popeye himself. Turns out, it’s not haunted at all—Popeye just happens to live there, and he’s not in the mood for visitors. When you mess with a sailor’s spinach stash, things get ugly fast.

The second movie, Popeye’s Revenge, follows a more classic slasher format. A bunch of young folks set out to open a summer camp but stumble upon the old tale of Popeye. When they investigate further, they discover that Popeye is very much alive—and equally displeased with their intrusion. This time, spinach isn’t just for strength; it’s the last thing they’ll see before things get… messy.

Given Popeye’s muscular, squinty-eyed, pipe-chewing appearance, it seems almost too perfect to reimagine him as a slasher villain. He’s always been a bit of a human oddity, and in these films, his love for spinach might just be the thing that keeps him going—and ensures that nobody messes with his turf.
