Real Vikings Podcast Reveals True Norse History with Iain Glen

I listen to podcasts every single day. It has become part of my routine, whether I am walking, working, or just looking to get lost in a great story. One new show I keep coming back to is Real Vikings, a standout series from the Noiser Podcast Network that delivers rich, cinematic storytelling with serious historical depth.

What draws me in is how Real Vikings takes a subject we think we know and completely reshapes it. The Vikings once struck fear across the medieval world, yet today they fascinate us just as much. This podcast leans into that tension, asking a simple but powerful question: Who were they really? Narrated by Iain Glen, known for Game of Thrones, the series brings a commanding voice to stories that feel both ancient and immediate.

Iain Glen delivers a voice that feels like a distant Viking longship emerging through the fog, steady, deliberate, and impossible to ignore. There is a quiet intensity in his narration that pulls you closer with every word, like the slow approach of something powerful just beyond the horizon. Before you realize it, you are fully drawn in, your attention captured as completely as any village in the path of a raid. His storytelling does not just guide the narrative; it surrounds you, taking hold of your senses and refusing to let go.

Each episode feels like stepping onto a longship and setting sail into the unknown. The show travels across vast Viking horizons, from Greenland to North Africa, from Constantinople to the shores of North America. Along the way, it introduces larger-than-life figures like Erik Bloodaxe, Olga of Kyiv, and Leif Erikson, peeling back the myths to reveal the real people behind the legends.

One thing that surprised me is how little the Vikings actually recorded about themselves. Much of what we know comes from those who feared and fought them. Their early use of runes did not capture detailed narratives, which means their story has often been told through the eyes of others. That is where Real Vikings really shines. By blending expert insights with immersive sound design and original music, it separates fact from fiction and fills in the gaps with thoughtful, research-driven storytelling.

The series does not shy away from the drama either. It dives into daring raids, brutal battles, and the rise of powerful rulers like Ragnar Lothbrok, Cnut the Great, and Harald Hardrada. At the same time, it explores lesser-known stories that are just as gripping, from a Viking-era murder mystery on Chesil Beach to the founding of Iceland’s Althing parliament, and even Norse graffiti etched into the walls of the Hagia Sophia.

What I appreciate most is how the podcast moves beyond the tired stereotype of Vikings as nothing more than fur-clad raiders. It paints a far more nuanced picture of a complex society filled with explorers, lawmakers, traders, and storytellers. The production quality is so immersive that every episode feels like a mini movie for your ears.

And I will admit, every time I hit play, I cannot help but hear Immigrant Song by Led Zeppelin echoing somewhere in the back of my mind.

If you are even remotely curious about Viking history, mythology, or the truth behind the legends, Real Vikings is absolutely worth your time. It is the kind of podcast that hooks you quickly and leaves you wanting more long after the final episode ends.
