I’m thrilled by the news that Silo has been renewed for two more seasons! This show has quickly become my absolute favorite. Inspired by this incredible series, I’ve started reading the books and was surprised to learn that the first two seasons are based on the first book alone. For those unfamiliar, Silo is a dystopian post-apocalyptic science fiction series by American author Hugh Howey. It all began in 2011 with the short story “Wool,” which was later expanded into a full novel, the series commonly packaged as three novels.
The upcoming seasons will adapt the remaining two books in the trilogy. Season three will likely explore Shift, the second book in the series, which shifts focus to the origins of the silos while continuing parts of Juliette Nichols’ story. Interestingly, Juliette doesn’t feature prominently in much of Shift, as it explores the prequel narrative of how the silos were constructed. I’m curious to see how the series balances this backstory with the established focus on Juliette, especially given Rebecca Ferguson’s compelling performance in the lead role.
Shift, published in 2012, is divided into three parts (Legacy, Order, and Pact), blending the silo’s genesis with the continuation of Juliette’s arc. Meanwhile, Apple TV+ has confirmed that Silo will conclude with its fourth season, delivering the final, climactic chapter of Hugh Howey’s bestselling trilogy.
A notable aspect of the renewal is that seasons 3 and 4 will be filmed back-to-back. This production strategy can offer several benefits, including:
- Cost Efficiency: Filming multiple seasons at once can often reduce overall production costs by streamlining logistics, crew scheduling, and set construction.
- Continuity: Back-to-back filming can help maintain consistency in terms of actors’ appearances, set designs, and overall tone, ensuring a smoother narrative flow between seasons.
- Reduced Production Time: While filming takes longer initially, it can shorten the overall time between season releases, meaning fans won’t have to wait as long for new episodes.
With season two now streaming on Apple TV+, new episodes are released every Friday through January 17, 2025. Starring and executive-produced by Rebecca Ferguson, the show has become a global hit, and I can’t wait to see how it continues to bring this incredible story to life!
“It has been a richly rewarding experience to adapt Hugh’s epic novels with our partners at Apple, and we are thrilled to have the opportunity to bring this complete story to the screen throughout four seasons,” said showrunner and executive producer Graham Yost. “With the final two chapters of ‘Silo,’ we can’t wait to give fans of the show an incredibly satisfying conclusion to the many mysteries and unanswered questions contained within the walls of these silos.”
“The addictive, inventive and moving ‘Silo’ has had us hooked since day one and we’ve loved watching global audiences become equally enamored with the world that Graham Yost has created,” said Matt Cherniss, head of programming for Apple TV+. “As we look to seasons three and four of this ambitious, character-driven sci-fi series, which will conclude Juliette Nichols’ journey and complete Hugh Howey’s epic trilogy of novels. We can’t wait for everyone to experience more of the show’s powerful performances led by the incomparable Rebecca Ferguson, as well as the unexpected twists, turns and surprises that we’ve come to expect from this very human story.”
“I’ve loved every minute of bringing Juliette to the screen and am immensely proud of what we’ve all created with ‘Silo’ since the first episode,” said star and executive producer Rebecca Ferguson. “I have always felt passionately about telling the entire story contained within Hugh Howey’s books, so I couldn’t be happier that audiences around the world have enthusiastically embraced the show. Alongside our parters at Apple, Graham, and the entire cast and crew, I cannot wait to dive into these final two thought-provoking seasons that will beautifully conclude this dystopian tale.”
