Spider-Noir reimagines Marvel’s iconic web-slinger through the lens of classic film noir. Set in the crime-ridden 1930s, this darker version swaps bright heroics for trench coats, corruption, and moral gray areas. The character now returns in the upcoming live-action Spider-Noir series on Prime Video, starring Nicolas Cage, who reprises his role from Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. The series premieres May 27, with the trailer available in both Black and White and Full Color formats.
Spider-Man Noir first appeared in 2009 under Marvel’s Marvel Noir imprint as Peter Parker of Earth-90214. Created by David Hine, Fabrice Sapolsky, Carmine Di Giandomenico, and Marko Djurdjević, the series placed familiar Marvel characters into a gritty Great Depression setting inspired by pulp fiction and gangster films. Unlike the traditional Spider-Man, this version embraced political corruption, organized crime, and social unrest.

In this alternate origin story, Peter grows up during the Great Depression before Uncle Ben is murdered by the Vulture, an agent of Norman Osborn. While investigating Osborn’s criminal empire, Peter encounters a mystical spider idol that shatters, releasing spiders that transform him. Guided by a haunting vision of a spider-god, he emerges with enhanced strength, agility, and organic webbing, giving Spider-Noir a supernatural edge.
Wearing a costume inspired by Uncle Ben’s World War I uniform, complete with aviator goggles and a black mask, Spider-Noir wages a relentless war on crime. His methods are harsher, and in some stories, he even uses firearms, reinforcing the brutal tone of his era. Storylines like Spider-Man Noir: Eyes Without a Face and his role in Marvel’s 2014 Spider-Verse event helped cement his popularity across comics, games, and animation.
Nicolas Cage’s performance in Into the Spider-Verse introduced Spider-Noir to mainstream audiences, blending deadpan humor with noir intensity. Revived in comics after Spider-Geddon, the character evolved further, reflecting Cage’s portrayal. Now, with the Prime Video live-action series expanding his world, Spider-Noir stands as one of Marvel’s boldest reinventions, proving that even Spider-Man can thrive in the shadows.
