The Doors 4K SteelBook Is the Ultimate Jim Morrison Release

Lionsgate Limited has now officially announced The Doors, directed by Oliver Stone and starring Val Kilmer as Jim Morrison, arriving as a 4K Ultra HD SteelBook on February 17, 2026. The film is currently available for pre-order, and this edition is positioned as the definitive way to experience Stone’s controversial, hypnotic vision.

This feels like the biggest and most meaningful home-video release The Doors fans could have hoped for. I was at the premiere when this film first hit theaters, and it felt like a cultural moment. The Doors had finally crossed into full-blown mainstream pop culture, larger than myth and legend. For me, it also marked one of the greatest performances of Val Kilmer’s career, rivaled only by his iconic performance in Tombstone.

The release is enhanced by a newly recorded introduction from Oliver Stone, where the director makes the case for why the theatrical cut remains the most authentic and powerful version of the film. Visually, the package is anchored by striking, all-new SteelBook artwork from acclaimed illustrator Akiko Stehrenberger, whose hallucinogenic design captures the raw, psychedelic spirit of Jim Morrison, the Lizard King himself.

Adding a deeply personal layer are brand-new conversations with Val Kilmer’s children, Jack and Mercedes, who offer rare insight into their father’s transformative performance and the toll and magic of inhabiting Morrison. The set also includes an interactive slipcase design, never-before-released footage, and exclusive Lionsgate Limited extras such as “Oliver Stone’s Director’s Intro” and the revealing featurette “Val, Oliver & Jim: The Making of Morrison.”

Outlaw, sex symbol, poet, and late-1960s rock god, Jim Morrison lives on in The Doors, Oliver Stone’s psychedelically resplendent film, now breaking through in mind-blowing 4K. Alongside his bandmates, played by Kyle MacLachlan, Frank Whaley, and Kevin Dillon, Morrison pushes music, performance, and spectacle to their outer limits, electrifying and scandalizing a generation. As excess, controversy, and addiction close in, Morrison leaves Los Angeles for France with his wife Pam, played by Meg Ryan, sealing the fate of what he famously called “the strangest life I’ve ever known.”

Val Kilmer’s portrayal of Jim Morrison in The Doors remains one of the most famously immersive performances in film history, a role defined by total commitment and personal sacrifice. Determined to do justice to Morrison’s voice, presence, and myth, Kilmer spent months in preparation, mastering nearly 50 Doors songs and recording them himself. His dedication went so far that surviving band members and legendary producer Paul A. Rothchild were reportedly convinced they were listening to Morrison, not an actor recreating him.

Kilmer even paid out of his own pocket for professional vocal training, working tirelessly to capture Morrison’s deep baritone, phrasing, and hypnotic delivery. But the transformation extended far beyond music. He fully absorbed Morrison’s physicality, speech patterns, poetry, and philosophical outlook, living inside the mindset of the Lizard King throughout production. The result was an eerily authentic performance that both impressed and unsettled those closest to the band.

That level of immersion came at a high psychological cost. Kilmer later revealed that the role consumed him so completely that he struggled to separate himself from Morrison once filming ended. The line between actor and subject blurred, forcing him to seek therapy to shed the persona and reclaim his own identity, a difficult process he later detailed candidly in his memoir. What emerged on screen, however, was a fearless, transformative performance that continues to stand as one of the most intense portrayals of a real-life musician ever committed to film.

The reaction from those closest to The Doors only deepened the legend of Val Kilmer’s performance. Guitarist Robby Krieger and drummer John Densmore were stunned by how completely Kilmer captured Jim Morrison’s voice, movements, and presence, with Densmore later admitting the resemblance was “scary” and worthy of an Oscar nomination. Producer Paul Rothchild was so unnerved by the transformation that he reportedly pleaded with Kilmer to stop embodying Morrison so fully, finding the experience deeply unsettling. Adding an eerie, metaphysical layer to the film.

For longtime fans, collectors, and anyone who believes this film captured lightning in a bottle, this 4K SteelBook release is not just a purchase; it is an essential addition. This is absolutely something I am getting.
