Fifty years ago, Space: 1999 launched into orbit without a major TV network deal and still managed to capture imaginations across the globe. Arriving just a bit more than 5 years after Star Trek was canceled, the groundbreaking British sci-fi series introduced a daring premise: Earth’s Moon blasted out of orbit, drifting through deep space on a quest for survival, as its human crew searched for a new planet to call home. Though Space: 1999 ran for only two seasons, it left behind a lasting legacy. Fans still dream of a sequel, reboot, or another voyage into the stars.
One ship from the series continues to inspire new generations: the legendary Eagle Transporter. The feature-length documentary THE EAGLE OBSESSION explores the cultural phenomenon of Space: 1999 through the story of this beloved spacecraft. More than a prop, the Eagle represents the optimism of the space age, the excitement of the Moon landing era, and a nostalgic vision of futures we still long to see come to life.
Directed by sci-fi creator Jeffrey Morris, THE EAGLE OBSESSION is a visually stunning journey across the globe, where Morris interviews an extraordinary cast, from visual effects pioneers who built worlds before CGI, to astronauts and rocket scientists who explore the cosmos for real, to authors and filmmakers who expanded the frontiers of science fiction. Together, they reveal how the Eagle influenced both popular culture and real-world space exploration.
Fueled by curiosity and a love for sci-fi, Jeffrey set out to create a documentary exploring how the Eagle, Space: 1999, and the wider world of science fiction have inspired and shaped the lives of countless fans. Along the way, he connected with an extraordinary roster of voices, from real-life space heroes like NASA Apollo 16 moonwalker Charlie Duke and SpaceX/Inspiration4 astronaut Sian Proctor, to the creative minds behind the magic, VFX artist and Eagle designer Brian Johnson, Hollywood VFX legend Bill George (Blade Runner, Star Trek II), and graphic designer Michael Okuda (Star Trek). He also spoke with Space: 1999 stars Barbara Bain and Nick Tate, iconic Star Trek actor William Shatner, Jamie Anderson, son of series creator Gerry Anderson, celebrated sci-fi author Kevin J. Anderson (co-author of numerous Dune prequels with Brian Herbert), science journalist Piers Bizony, and die-hard fan Jan Wenneberg.
Today, the Eagle Transporter stands proudly alongside the Millennium Falcon and the USS Enterprise as one of the most iconic starships in science fiction history. Loved by millions of fans worldwide, it continues to inspire dreamers, engineers, and storytellers to push beyond the horizon.
THE EAGLE OBSESSION shows how a 1970s sci-fi ship broke orbit, became a cultural starship, and continues to fuel the imagination of fans across galaxies. More than nostalgia, it’s a celebration of the stories that shaped our vision of the future and a reminder that humanity’s greatest mission is still to chart the stars.
The film came to life in part thanks to a successful crowdfunding campaign. Morris plans to premiere THE EAGLE OBSESSION later this year, aligning with the 50th anniversary of Space: 1999, and intends to make it available worldwide on both digital and physical media. It’s exciting to see how Space: 1999 has inspired so many people across the globe—here’s hoping this project soars!
