D’oh! I still can’t believe it. The Simpsons has officially reached its 800th episode. I was still in college when Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa, and Maggie first bounced into our living rooms, and I think I gave up on the show around episode 500. At that point, Homer had probably eaten his weight in donuts and my patience had run out.
The Associated Press is celebrating this milestone with interviews from the cast and crew. They take fans on a whirlwind tour from early pencil sketches to the iconic characters we quote in daily life. You get a peek behind the curtain at how each episode blends humor with heart, and how the music evolved from catchy opening riffs to clever background motifs. Springfield’s cultural footprint is huge and still growing.
Of course, the Simpsons are not the champions of longevity everywhere. Across the globe, the Japanese series Sazae-san has aired over 2,800 episodes since October 5, 1969. That means the Simpsons still have a Krusty-sized mountain of episodes to climb if they want to catch up. Personally, I doubt I will be around to see that milestone. I might need a Homer-style nap that lasts a few decades to make it through.
Even after all these years, the show continues to be full of surprises. Bart still gets up to mischief that would make Principal Skinner scream “Ay Caramba,” Lisa still delivers wisdom that makes even Marge raise an eyebrow, and Homer still finds new ways to inhale donuts and chaos. The 800th episode is a reminder that Springfield is alive and well. It is a world where Moe still serves bad drinks, Mr. Burns still plots world domination, and Maggie’s pacifier still squeaks in perfect timing.
Whether you are a die-hard fan or a couch potato like Homer, this milestone is a celebration of humor, heart, and the weird, wonderful world of Springfield. It proves that no matter how many episodes come and go, the show will keep sneaking into our hearts, one D’oh, one Woo-Hoo, and one Ay Caramba at a time.
