Tom Gauld is one of my all-time favorite cartoonists! His beautifully simple yet deeply impactful illustrations never fail to make me smile, think, or both at the same time. His approach to storytelling is deceptively minimal, but his wit and insight pack a powerful punch.
To celebrate World Book Day, The Guardian is treating readers to three exclusive cartoons by Gauld—what a fantastic way to honor books and storytelling!

Born in 1976, Gauld studied at Edinburgh College of Art and later at the Royal College of Art, honing his distinctive artistic voice. His clever and often literary-themed cartoons appear weekly in The Guardian and New Scientist, delighting audiences with their dry humor and keen observations. Beyond his editorial work, he has also created several brilliant comic books and even a charming picture book for children.

He currently lives in London with his family, continuing to bring joy and laughter to readers worldwide.
