“What’s plastic, a meter long, brightly colored and sounds like an elephant? It’s the vuvuzela, the noise-making trumpet of South Africa football fans, and it’s come to symbolize the sport of the country.”
The sale of earplugs has shot through the roof for the 2010 World Cup. The deafening sound of the vuvuzela is so loud that even the global audience is annoyed by the constant buzzing of 50 000 elephant sounding noise trumpets vibrating through televisions. FIFA is considering banning the instrument outright, the noise is making it unpleasant for the audience as a whole. Players have come out complaining about the decibel noise being too high in some stadiums.
‘We have modified the mouthpiece, there is now a new vuvuzela which will blow noise that is 20 decibels less than the old one,’ Neil van Schalkwyk, a partner at Masincedane Sport, told The Star newspaper in South Africa.
