Wednesday: Own The First Season of the Hit Comedy Series

From the creators Alfred Gough and Miles Millar (“Smallville”), and director Tim Burton (The Nightmare Before Christmas, Beetlejuice), the kooky and spooky first season of “Wednesday,” the TV series based on Wednesday Addams of the iconic Addams Family, which streams on Netflix and is produced by MGM Television, a division of Amazon MGM Studios, comes to DVD and Blu-ray March 26, 2024. “Wednesday” Season One.

Before Tim Burton’s interpretation, Wednesday Addams was predominantly a background character in the original Addams Family series, often overshadowed by the antics of the adult members. However, Burton’s rendition, particularly through Jenna Ortegain’s portrayal, thrusts Wednesday into the limelight, solidifying her as a central figure within the Addams Family universe. The Netflix series has attracted a fresh audience to the franchise, infusing it with newfound energy and ensuring its sustained popularity. This resurgence underscores the enduring depth and adaptability of the Addams Family mythos, which continues to evolve and captivate audiences, even as it explores the narratives of secondary characters.

Adding to Wednesday’s legacy, Jenna Ortega’s portrayal marks the seventh rendition of the character across various adaptations spanning six decades. Christina Ricci’s depiction in the 1990s film set the standard for Wednesday’s iconic blend of sardonic wit and dark charm. In contrast, Jenna Ortega’s performance in the 2023 Netflix series imbues the character with a gothic edge and a socially awkward demeanor, offering a fresh interpretation while honoring the essence of Wednesday Addams.

“Wednesday” is a sleuthing, supernaturally infused mystery charting Wednesday Addams’ years as a student at Nevermore Academy. Wednesday’s attempts to master her emerging psychic ability, thwart a monstrous killing spree that has terrorized the local town and solve the supernatural mystery that embroiled her parents 25 years ago — all while navigating her new and very tangled relationships at Nevermore.

The series stars Jenna Ortega as Wednesday, Gwendoline Christie as Principal Larissa Weems, Jamie McShane as Sheriff Donovan Galpin, Hunter Doohan as Tyler Galpin, Percy Hynes White as Xavier Thorpe, Emma Myers as Enid Sinclair, and Joy Sunday as Bianca Barclay. Guest stars include Catherine Zeta-Jones as Morticia Addams, Luis Guzmán as Gomez Addams, Isaac Ordonez as Pugsley Addams, and Fred Armisen as Uncle Fester.

The critically-acclaimed series received 12 Emmy nominations in 2023 including Outstanding Comedy Series and Outstanding Lead Actress In A Comedy Series for Jenna Ortega who became the second youngest woman to ever be nominated in the category and the third Latina following Rita Moreno and America Ferrera. Tim Burton was nominated for Best Director For A Comedy Series. The 8-episode series was watched for almost 6 billion minutes during its first five days available on Netflix and remains Netflix’s most popular English TV series of all time with 252.1 Million views.
