What is the Secret of Soylent Green?

Soylent Green: The “miracle food” of high-energy plankton, gathered from the oceans of the world. Due to its enormous popularity, Soylent Green is in short supply, so rememberโ€”Tuesday is Soylent Green day.

The world is crowded. Far too crowded. Its starving billions live on lentils, soya beans, and โ€”if theyโ€™re luckyโ€”the odd starving rat.

In a New York City groaning under the burden of 35 million inhabitants, detective Andy Rusch is engaged in a desperate and lonely hunt for a killer everyone has forgotten. For even in a world such as this, a policeman can find himself utterly aloneโ€ฆ.

Acclaimed on its original publication in 1966,ย Make Room! Make Room!ย was adapted into the 1973 movieย Soylent Green.

Author Harry Harrison claimed, “The idea came from an Indian I met afterย the war, in 1946. He told me, ‘Overpopulation is the big problem coming up in the world’ (nobody had ever heard of it in those days) and he said, ‘Want to make a lot of money, Harry? You have to importย rubber contraceptivesย to India.’ I didn’t mind making money, but I didn’t want to be the rubber king of India!”
