A black and white illustration on a red background shows a man in a suit holding a megaphone and shouting. To his right, large white block letters spell out 'RAGEBAIT' with a phonetic pronunciation '[rayj-bayt]' and the definition 'noun: Online content designed to provoke anger or outrage and encourage reactions.'

Word of the Week: Ragebait

RAGEBAIT (pronounced: rayj-bayt)

The internet has turned getting angry into a spectator sport. All you need is a ridiculous opinion, a smartphone and a few thousand people ready to argue with a stranger. Welcome to ragebait, where making people mad can be a business model.

On October 10, 2026, ragebait was named Germany’s Youth Word of the Year, beating peak and crashout. Oxford had already chosen ragebait as its Word of the Year for 2025. We have officially reached the point where annoying people online deserves its own vocabulary lesson.

The word combines rage, meaning anger, with bait, something used to lure a target. Ragebait is content deliberately designed to provoke outrage and encourage people to comment, share, or argue. It might be an outrageous claim, an irritating video, or an opinion so absurd that ignoring it feels almost impossible.

Here is the trick. The creator does not need you to agree. They just need you to react. Every angry comment can push the post in front of more people. You could spend twenty minutes explaining why someone is wrong, only to discover you have been working for their marketing department without getting paid.

Of course, not every ridiculous opinion is ragebait. Sometimes people simply disagree. The difference is the intention to provoke. So before firing off that furious reply, ask yourself one question: are you correcting the record, or are you taking the bait?

Sometimes the smartest comment on the internet is the one you never write.
