Halloween costumes have officially entered the snack aisle. This year, you can apparently forget about dressing as a vampire, witch, or serial killer. Why bother when you can dress like a giant bag of Wotsits? Welcome to the world of Snackstumes, the wonderful word created when snacks and costumes decided to have a baby.
And yes, apparently this is a real thing. Food brands are getting into Halloween in a big way, creating oversized costumes based on their own products. Walkers, for example, has been promoting adult-sized Wotsits and Monster Munch costumes. In other words, you can now spend Halloween looking like something you would normally find at the bottom of a grocery bag.
The word itself is pretty easy to figure out. A Snackstume is a Halloween costume based on a snack or food product. The plural, Snackstumes, is what you get when the snack aisle decides to throw a Halloween party. Nobody sat around waiting for Snackstume to appear in an old dictionary. A brand needed a catchy word, mashed two existing words together and suddenly we had a new member of the Halloween vocabulary.
And honestly, it works. Snackstume immediately tells you what you’re looking at. It is silly, but in the best possible way. You don’t need a marketing degree to understand it, and you don’t even need to think very hard. It is a snack. It is a costume. Put them together and you’ve got a Snackstume.
We’ve all heard the saying “you are what you eat.” So why stop there? Why not dress like what you eat? That, essentially, is the thinking behind the Snackstume. Halloween has moved beyond witches, vampires and the guy who wears the same old sheet costume every year. Now you can become the snack.
But the scariest costume of all might be dressing up as a grocery bill. Now that’s scary.
