Paul McCartney and Wings Finally Get Their Due

Man on the Run – Music from the Motion Picture Soundtrack: For most of my life, I have leaned firmly toward John Lennon when it came to the Beatles. Paul McCartney may well have been the most musically inventive Beatle, but Lennon had an instinct for pushing ideas beyond the expected, especially in his later years. As I have gotten older, though, my appreciation for McCartney’s post-Beatles work has grown, particularly his time with Wings. I will admit that part of my earlier indifference came from simple ignorance. Wings never received the same level of cultural mythology as Lennon’s solo years, and the story of the band is not as widely known unless you actively seek it out.

Revisiting this music now has been a revelation. It has aged beautifully, while much of Lennon’s 1970s output has begun to lose its impact for me. Listening to Wings today feels like discovering something new, even though the songs have been around for decades. McCartney’s Beatles legacy often overshadows what came after, but Wings deserves to be heard on its own terms, as a bold and confident reinvention rather than a footnote.

That creative rebirth is the focus of Man on the Run, the upcoming feature documentary directed by Academy Award winner Morgan Neville. The film traces Paul McCartney and Wings’ rise through the 1970s, capturing a period defined by risk-taking, reinvention, and relentless momentum. Arriving alongside the documentary is a companion album titled Man on the Run Music from the Motion Picture Soundtrack, a 12-song snapshot of McCartney’s 1970s creativity drawn from across the Wings catalogue.

To mark the announcement, fans can already hear two rare tracks exclusively on Amazon Music: Arrow Through Me (Rough Mix), previously unreleased from the Back to the Egg sessions, and Live and Let Die (Rockshow), taken from the 1980 concert film. A third unreleased track, Gotta Sing Gotta Dance, originally from The James Paul McCartney TV Special, will also appear on the soundtrack.

Both the documentary and soundtrack arrive on February 27, with the album available across multiple formats, including limited edition colored vinyl pressings, CD, and digital release. With artwork overseen by Paul McCartney and Hipgnosis legend Aubrey Po Powell, the release feels like a long overdue reappraisal of Wings as one of the most vital chapters of McCartney’s career.
