I’ve always had a soft spot for the guys who never let go of the spark. Gerry Alvarez is one of those rare cases. Eternally youthful, always dialed into that raw garage sound, he was the driving force behind The Gruesomes, and long before that, just a guy I knew in a commercial art program.
Back then, Gerry was a full-on mod. Sharp look, sharp taste, totally locked into the aesthetic. Watching him evolve into this garage band frontman felt less like a transformation and more like he was always heading there, just waiting for the volume to get turned up. I caught the rise of The Gruesomes firsthand, even spun their tracks on my college radio show, which still feels like one of those small but perfect full-circle moments.
The band may have stepped aside, but Gerry never did. He shifted gears, launched The Gerry Alvarez Odyssey, and planted himself in Toronto, which he’d probably argue is the center of the universe. And honestly, for what he’s doing, it kind of is.
The title track from Candy Prankster says everything you need to know. It leans hard into that psychedelic garage freakbeat zone, but there’s a pop instinct underneath it that keeps things grounded. It’s not just noise and nostalgia. There’s structure, hooks, and this slightly off-kilter charm that makes you want to replay it just to catch what you missed the first time.

Producer Flavio Monopoli called the project a creative leap, and that tracks. Candy Prankster feels like a line in the sand. It’s the moment where Gerry steps out from The Gruesomes’ shadow and builds something that’s entirely his own. The album has been tagged as a must-have for psych rock fans, and that’s not hype. It earns it.
What sticks with me isn’t just the music, though. It’s the consistency. Decades later, Gerry is still chasing the same sound, the same feeling, the same idea of what rock and roll is supposed to be. No shortcuts, no reinvention for the sake of trends. Just that original spark, still burning.
Keep the flame alive, Gerry.
