A weekly Sunday look at the 60’s advertising age. Since Mad Men went off the air till next season, here is a way to celebrate the series with week one. Salem cigarettes. The halcyon days when one could smoke just about anywhere. For some reason the image of a witch burning is encrusted in my skull.
Salem is brand of cigarettes introduced in 1956 by the RJR as the first filter-tipped menthol cigarette. Its name (along with that of the Winston brand) derives from Winston-Salem, North Carolina, the city where RJR was founded and headquartered. Salem cigarettes are unique in that they are blended with Asian Menthol rather than the traditional mainstream Menthol.-source
With Salem, “you smoke refreshed.” You have to admire a cigarette that promises, “a breath of springtime freshness”. We’re talking about a cigarette, right?-source
