AC/DC proved that old men rock better. Power Up their latest record is proving to best their best work in a very long time. There has been a recent resurgence of old rockers releasing decent music. Deep Purple and their contemporaries have also unleashed amazing work. Is there something in the water lately that is augmenting their musical output? To celebrate the Record Store Day on June 12, AC/DC announced special products from their latest album. AC/DC is releasing a limited 12″ picture disc Through The Mists Of Time/Witch’s Spell housed in a PVC jacket with an OBI strip at the top.ย
In a new interview withย STEREOPHONICSโย Kelly Jonesย forย Radio X,ย AC/DCย frontmanย Brian Johnsonย confirmed that the bandโs long-awaited comeback album,ย โPower Upโ, is a tribute to foundingย AC/DCย rhythm guitaristย Malcolm Young, who died in 2017 from effects of dementia at age 64.ย Malcolmย is credited as a writer on all 12 tracks onย โPower Upโ, along with his brother,ย AC/DCย lead guitaristย Angus Young.
โThis whole album really is dedicated toย Malcolm,โย Brianย said (see video below). โHe was everywhere in the studio. And Iโm not being a softie, โcause Iโm not a believer in that kind of stuff, but boy oh boy,ย Malcolmย was everywhere. And I knowย Angusย felt the loss ofย Malcolmย a lot more than he would usually let on. Andย Malcolmย had written half these songs withย Angusย years before. He always had a box of songs. He was meticulous,ย Malcolm. Every time he andย Angusย put something down, heโd date it and catalog it. And he wouldnโt forget a thing. And thatโs whenย Angusย said, โWell, letโs do some of these things.’โ
Johnson also discussed the โPower Upโ track โThrough The Mists Of Timeโ, which has been described in one review as โthe closest thing weโll get to AC/DC reflecting on the ever-present face of old father time.โ
โThe riff forย โThrough The Mists Of Timeโย came out, andย Angusย wrote the lyrics for that song, and I believe he captured everything โ about the early days when the band started when rock and roll were just carefree when nobody gave a flying thought about anything except just having a good time and playing,โย Brianย said. โAnd all this lovely innocence was gone. And I think [the lyrics] encapsulated [the sentiment]. To tell you the truth, every time I hear it, I still get a goosebump, and itโs a tribute toย Malcolm:ย โThrough The Mists Of Timeโ. And itโs different. I donโt know if itโs different fromย anythingย weโve done before, but it certainly stands apart.โ
