Tack’s Cartoon Tips for the Aspiring Cartoonist printed Devoe & Reynolds in 1923 is almost 90 years old. It is perhaps the one of the first cartooning how to books of the 20th century to be published. The simple trade tools of the cartoonist are still relevant minus the computer element. It’s back to basics. The pencil,pen,eraser and the individual have always been the genesis of the idea onto paper.This little time capsule was first discovered by Daily Show associate producer Dave Blog.

Born in Dillsboro, Jackson County, North Carolina, Tack Knight moved to San Francisco in 1913. He attended the Mary Hopkins Institute of Art and began his newspaper career at the Oakland Tribune in 1914. He drew sports and commercial art, and did animated cartooning. He ghosted for Gene Byrnes on the newspaper strip ‘Reg’lar Fellers’ from 1924 to 1929 and created ‘My Big Brudder’ for Dell Publishing. He created the syndicated newspaper strips ‘Baby Sister’ (1929) and ‘Little Folks’ (1930). His animation credits include Disney, Fleischer and KGO-TV.
