DC’s Legends of Tomorrow: 6th Season

DC's Legends of Tomorrow are the greatest heroes that nobody knows. Operating under the time fringes, the motley crew protects the timeline from going rogue caused by either super-villains or themselves. In six years the team has changed from its original inception. It's hard to believe the show is still going strong after a massive cast change. DC’s Legends of Tomorrow does not take itself too seriously. The show gives nods to the history of DC continuity and pop culture. It will even at times poke fun at its competition, Marvel Comics. If you are looking for light entertainment and an hour of mindless fun, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow: The Complete Sixth Season is your show.

Criterion Collection’s La Strada

Federico Fellini’s La Strada views like a modern-day fairytale. True fairytales always end in cruelty. The movie's backdrop is a poverty ravished war-torn Italy in the 50s. Way before Clint Eastwood tried his hand at spaghetti westerns, both Anthony Quinn and Richard Basehart paved the way for American actors to work in Italian cinema. What was viewed as a downgrade or career suicide, La Strada turned into movie gold for both actors. From this movie, Italy and America enjoyed cross-pollination in the movie industry that inspired many years to come after La Strada.

Ballad for Sophie written by Filipe Melo and illustrated Juan Cavia

I knew nothing of writer Filipe Melo and illustrator Juan Cavia. As I keep reading, the book flowed in a cinematic tone. How silly of me, both of the creators have cinema backgrounds. As most of you know your friendly bookstores are littered with superhero graphic novels. So it is very hard for good graphic storytelling to get through the mainstream audiences. Top Shelf Productions (an imprint of IDW) publisher of Ballad for Sophie, sums it as a music-themed graphic novel by Portuguese musician Filipe Melo and artist Juan Cavia that is packed with all of the drama of a rock ‘n’ roll biopic and with more twists than a night at the opera.

Led Zeppelin The Biography by Bob Spitz

Rock star. Whatever that term means to you, chances are it owes a debt to Led Zeppelin. No one before or since has lived the dream quite like Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, John Paul Jones, and John Bonham. In Led Zeppelin, Bob Spitz takes their full measure, separating the myth from the reality with his trademark connoisseurship and storytelling flair.

The Flowers of Evil as translated by Aaron Poochigian

Flowers of Evil has always been part of my life since my college days. That is where most people get to hear about Charles Baudelaire. I own various translations of Flowers of Evil. Being fluent in French poses no issue for me to read the book in French, however, Aaron Poochigian's translation shines the prose to a more modern contemporary tone. I am really excited about getting this version of Baudelaire's classic book. It is hard to believe that it has been 200 years since Flowers of Evil was first published. It's a great testament that Flowers still continues to influence both poets and singers for such a long time. I found myself reading Flowers of Evil even more in COVID times. The dark and sombre themes run through once again in our present time. It's not every day I get excited about a translation but after hearing Aaron Poochigian's passion for Baudelaire on Jacke Wilson's podcast History of Literature has me sold. I highly recommend you buy The Flowers of Evil translated by Aaron Poochigian.

LIFE‘s new special issue Peanuts: The World’s Greatest Comic Strip

Over five decades of solitary and deeply personal work, Charles Schulz drew 17,897 Peanuts comic strips, producing a body of work that constitutes not only the richest achievement in comic strip history but also the most resonant sports strip of all time. Thousands of Peanuts panels are filtered through Schulz’s love of sports, a collective subcategory that perhaps more than any other delivers the essence of his work.

Penguin Classics to Publish Special Editions of Marvel Comics

I love the Penguin Classics series books. You will find some of humanity's greatest books ever written. Comics have come a long way since Superman hopped over buildings in Metropolis. Marvel Comics is now deemed as classic literature by Penguin Classics. The first three books in the series, Black Panther, Captain America, and The Amazing Spider-Man will be published on June 14, 2022. These three books should be hot sellers for Penguin Books and perhaps pump new sales for both Penguin and Marvel.

Smallville: The Complete Series 20th Anniversary Edition

I was lucky to see the groundbreaking series Smallville when it originally premiered on October 16, 2001. For ten years, Smallville's adversarial showdown between Lex Luther and Clark Kent went back and forth. Viewers waited for Clark to become Superman as he secretly used his powers to help the citizens of Smallville. Along the way, Clark met a gamut of characters and actors from Superman lore from both movies and comic books. Smallville became the blueprint for Arrow and The Flash series on CW for years to come. Smallville: The Complete Series 20th Anniversary Edition is a great way to see the whole run of the classic series.

The Flash: The Complete Seventh Season

Barry Allan has been running for seven seasons and is not running out of speed yet. Season eight is around the corner and is running at full throttle. The Flash: The Complete Seventh Season was part of the Arrowverse and technically a spin-off series from Arrow. The Flash will be matching the Arrow series this year and outpacing Arrow with a 13 episode 9th season. The Flash always had a richer history in the comics to draw from. Season seven is no different, the show has settled on cruise control since season 4 with the same formula. Mirror Monarch plays a central role in the Mirrorverse storyline. The formula-driven Flash series will soon come to a halt. You can tune into The Flash on The CW every Tuesday night at 8:00 pm ET for new Season 8 episodes.

Paleontologist Mats E. Eriksson names 469 million-years-old fossil after Black Sabbath’s Tony Iommi

A new species of conodonts has just been discovered by a Danish/Swedish team of paleontologists. The fossil is around 469 million years old and was recovered from a succession of limestone in western Russia, rocks that once formed the seafloor sediments during the Ordovician Period. Because the species proved to be new to science, it had to be formally baptized with a unique Latin moniker. As all study authors are passionate hobby musicians and have long love affairs with the history of heavy rock music, they decided to honor one of heavy metal's true pioneers — guitar legend Tony Iommi of BLACK SABBATH.

Deep Purple Turning to Crime

It has become a novelty act for many groups as of late to do a whole album of cover songs. Deep Purple has come full circle. Ian Gillan and Roger Glover who both were in Episode Six covered Arthur Lee's Love song "Alone Again Or." I am not surprised that the first song is "7 And 7 Is." It's a great selection of tunes on what is going to be perhaps the last official studio album for the group. Never say never. This is a great range of musical influences. Bob Dylan's "Watching The River Flow" is a welcome surprise. This is a must for Deep Purple Fans.

Buy Netflix’s Squid Game inspired Halloween costumes

Folks you might be seeing quite a lot of Squid Games costumes out for Halloween this year. The psychologically thrilling Korean drama — which premiered on September 17 is catching the world by surprise. Amazon and Etsy are selling non-sanctioned costumes. Most of the costumes are unisex, I am sure some sicko will come out with a sexy version of the Squid Games costume. Netflix fell asleep behind the wheel with this one. Better get one before Halloween gets here, shipping could be a problem if you do not watch out from where you are getting the costume.
