The Secret of Kells is an animated movie from Ireland that just went under the radar in 2009 with not much media exposure in North America. It is a great piece of cinematic traditional animation backed with a solid story and artistic liberty of form. Not a Hollywood powerhouse production, The Secret of Kells found no support from a country not known for animation. I discovered The Secret Of Kells locally as I found out the film was making the rounds in theaters willing to carry non casual fare on their screens. They got the biggest nod at the Oscars with Best Animated Feature Film nomination.
Young Brendan lives in the Abbey of Kells, a remote medieval outpost under siege from raiding barbarians. One day a celebrated master illuminator arrives from foreign lands carrying an ancient but unfinished book, brimming with secret wisdom and more »powers. To help complete the magical book, Brendan has to overcome his deepest fears on a dangerous quest that takes him into the enchanted forest, where mythical creatures hide. It is here that he meets the fairy Aisling, a mysterious young wolf-girl, who helps him along the way. But with the barbarians closing in, will Brendan’s determination and artistic vision illuminate the darkness and show that enlightenment is the best fortification against evil?
